The J.I Group Promoters of the Year Award-

B.F.E. (Business First Ent.) w/ Marcelis, McKinley and (my girl) Zulu... This year's award was chosen a little differently this time around. I looked for the promoters who took the game in the light that it should be taken. Do your job, get the people to the event, then hand the reigns over to the DJ and enjoy yourself with your patrons. Who did that better than B.F.E. in 2010. From the 'photo shoots' to the shades to the Facebook convos, B.F.E. made their patrons feel like best friends and family. Keep up the good work.

DJ SNATCH-1 Party of the Year-

I did a bunch of incredible nightclub events in 2010. Nuff Respect goes out to all the truly hard-working promoters and the patrons who came out to enjoy our production. However, 2010 saw DJ SNATCH-1 branch off into many different, yet very mature directions. So, with that said, this year's awards goes out to the 'DJ SNATCH-1/ 'So You Call Yourself A Fan/ I.M.S. SUPER BOWL PARTY' at Samantha's Southern Cuisine. The event was a RSVP'd SOLD OUT Extravaganza, lol. We actually turned over 100 people away, sending them to other local establishments because our place was over capacity. (Share The Love with the Community). We had all the effects of a NFL Game, including the Pre-Game Tailgating Party, Trivia, Games, Raffles, Dope Music from the Entire Immense Music Squad, Drinks and Food Menus plus a GREAT GAME!!! What could beat that?

All the DJs who think that they're bigger than they really are. There are waaay too many of you 'GREAT DJs', who really have NEVER TRULY CRUSHED a party!!! EVER!!! The best asset of a DJ is his humility. When you're told that you 'Killed It', a GREAT DJ replies 'It was cool' or something along those lines. AND, learn some music... Do some research into other genres and history. The crowd is a pawn of your direction. Every now and then, TEACH THEM SOMETHING!!! On that note, I cosign those 'So you wanna be a D-J' YouTube videos. The one about the 'OPEN-UP DJ' felt like I wrote it myself!!!

DJ SMOOVE SKI.... To folks in the Bronx NY, this kid has been rocking all of their Hottest Events for years. You can even ask the peeps at 40/40 CLUB in Atlantic City if he gets busy and they'll cosign him as well. But when it came down to adding new DJs to my team, DA UNION, we put Smoove Ski's potential and accomplishments up against many other prospective DJs and he out-shined them by far. I'd say, if you plan to throw an event and want one of the Hottest Young DJs in the city to kill it, contact DJ Smoove Ski.

DJ BOOF.... This guy is a Self-Promotion Beast!!! From 'What Up, Baiii' (a local catch phrase that ran threw the streets in 2010) to Wendy Williams, Boof is passing through more Urban Communities than Lottery Tickets. I see a big year about to unfold for this guy. I think we need to have a 'conversation'. Lol....

1. SUNDAY BRUNCH: For The Love of Black Films.... Along with DJ EXEQTIVE and Mr. Go Hard Harris, we gave our Community an event that the entire family, from kids to Grandma, could enjoy TOGETHER. For the Spring/ Summer Season, we encouraged people to come out and enjoy a detectible brunch menu, courtesy of Samantha's Southern, combined with a Classic Family-Based Black Film and periodically threw in a few Special Causes like Sickle Cell and Breast Cancer Research and Diabetes Awareness, equip with Celebrity Guest Hosts. Our idea was so 'powerful' that other off-springs began to pop up throughout the City. Imitation is the epitome of Flattery.

Sunday Brunch 2011 returns in the Spring time. Look for us!!!

2. DJ SNATCH-1 COAT/ CLOTHING DRIVE.... With the help of my Friends in the various communities, we were able to make six sizable donations to various Charitable Organizations, including Winter Coats, Children's Clothes and Toys, Pampers and Business Suits. 3. ROY WILKINS PARK FAMILY DAY.... We took the opportunity to assist in increasing awareness to the dangers of High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol in the Urban Community. As a victim, I understand the need for close attention to health and awareness. Too many of our people are succumbing to this 'disease' at young ages. Let's fight the trend....

Good Day...

Usually, I keep my Sports rants to my Sports friends but this Michael Vick stuff is crazy. Former Pittsburgh RB/ Current ESPN announcer Merrill Hodge said about Vick's excessive hits, with no yellow flags in last night's game against the Dallas Cowboys, they were 'legal and not worthy of a penalty'. And he continued by saying 'Vick isn't (Peyton) Manning or (Tom) Brady so the hit near the sidelines (no sir, he was out of bounds) was clean because he's a running back'. WTF?? No he's not!!! HE'S A QUARTERBACK!!! This especially troubles me because it came from a player who was forced to retire IN HIS PRIME, due to excessive CONCUSSIONS!!!

The 'TRUTH' is... this is really bothering me. Seems like it's a multi-group collaboration against Vick. And I think it has everything to do with him being the worst thing for the structure of the NFL. They don't want the 'rep' to be an 'ex-con', 'nigger' quarterback. Thus, they allow him to take far worse hits than Brady or Manning and without even a flag.

But... I'm telling yall, it's bigger than the obvious. The league is not only watching Vick, but why do u think the league is pretty much backing Brett Favre's shenanigans? it's because TAVARIS JACKSON is his backup. If it was Jordan Palmer (Carson's bum little brother), he'd be playing now and the league would tell Favre to gracefully bow out and they'll give him a job sitting next to Rodney Harrison & Tony Dungy.

The Quarterback position is supposed to be the 'smart' guy on the field... His 'IQ', blah, blah blah... so no way in hell do they want to see a 'hood nigga' be the best at it and the face of the NFL. Look at all the black QBs that they 'let' strive. Donovan, Warren Moon, even Doug Williams (til he got too black, lol) were all 'house-type niggas'. Then look how they treated RANDALL (Cunningham). They don't even mention his name anymore but I still hear & see Dan Marino. They did basically the same thing, just using different ways (one by arm, one by leg) but neither won the big one. I still see Dan Fouts!!!

Add to that, MICHAEL VICK is gonna want a ton load of money at the end of this season too. This Dog-Killin' Nigger... Damn!!!

Then look who's next... Cam Newton

Believe me. It ain't by accident. That NBA Ref showed me that word from league offices do flow thru the system.

I'm saying. Favre has all the records. Most are uncatchable based on the time he's played plus the physicality on THIS game as opposed to 10 years ago. Guys are 340 lbs, muscular and run a 4.5 40. Favre has a ring and is filthy rich. What else is there to play for? Green Bay doesn't even care about the beef with him anymore. Their bigger issue is why their current QB keeps getting concussed. Favre is only playing because he can. I'm not mad. I'm a Viking fan and he still plays at a high level but he risks his life on every down now. 41 year olds don't have the physical make-up to take these hits that he gets. Your body isn't as sturdy as a 25 year old.

On the flip side....

When will Desean Jackson grow up? He's Vick biggest problem. Just when u go, 'why are they holding the black man down', Jackson turns a simple 'out pattern' into 91 yard Touchdown and then 'dickheads' the celebration, costing his team a 15 yard Unsportsmanlike Conduct Penalty. Even though it was a borderline call, you know the rules!!! They were targeted at YOU. Cmon son...

League Execs and Board Members: 'See how these monkeys act when they win something? Don't you dare make one of them the face of this organization.'

In closing, a related instance would be Michael Jordan coined the term '3-peat', bought a team and even left his gold-digger wife for a white chick but they still won't make his image the new logo of the NBA. Who EVER calls Jerry West the G.O.A.T. nowadays? Nobody!!!

In a time where everyone is basically looking for Kartel & Mavado with a splash of Gyptian… a lot of other talented artists get lost in the mix। So for this weeks feature, I want to endorse a not so known artist and his new single. Baby Chris is no stranger to the Dancehall Scene or the mainstream scene for that matter. Although most people didn’t know it was him, we all remember his smash hit on Jah Snowcone’s Applause riddim which also features Sean Paul’s Temperature. Baby Chris was also know as Crazy Frog and had the hit Ring Ding Ding, the dance made popular by Passa Passa in Jamaica. To this day if that song plays everyone gets mad revving up their motorbikes. Since then, he has done a few other songs that have done well on the dancehall charts, including Best Woman which is a song bigging up single mothers that had the dancehalls in a frenzy this past Mother’s Day. Recently Baby Chris released a new song What Did I Do on Seanizzle’s Split Personality Riddim that has a great deal of Crossover Potential. In this song he shows ability to , and he does so well, which shows how versatile of an artist he really is… This song gets the IMS Stamp of Approval.

Today's 'TRUTH' is.....

'Men Lie, Women Lie.... Numbers Don't Lie'

As much as the media, bloggers and 'good folk' tried to destroy Kanye West for his 'Taylor Swift' incident, which subsequently led to the 'Matt Lauer Interview' incident and collaborated with 'George Bush Hates Black People', his latest album 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' debuted on Billboard's Top Album chart at Number 1. It sold over and estimated 500k copies in it's first week.

Add to that, the debut album from Young Money/ Cash Money Queens native, Nicki Minaj came in 2nd place. Her sales were estimated at over 325k, despite the social network assassination attempts. The 'TRUTH' is I'm amazed (not really) at the amount of sales even though there was a heavy amount of my friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter (respectively) who claimed that the album wasn't worth the studio time or money that it took to produce. I guess everybody had to buy their own copy to hear it for themselves.... Chuckle!!!

Vocal powerhouse. Songwriter. Dancer. Fashionista. No, we’re not describing another lackluster pop star. These are the few words that can be used to describe the newest edition to the R&B/Pop World, Yoodee Frances. If you’re not convinced yet, just listen to the music. Her sound is just as enticing as her name. Yoodee's music takes the high-energy elements of R&B/Pop and combines them with a gritty Hip Hop & Rock knock. Her lyrics? They knock even harder. In whatever subject she tackles in her music, she fearlessly conveys it. "I am never afraid to be me," she notes. Yoodee’s songs are a constant tug-of-war between sweetness & tough-girl attitude. And she shows no sign of letting up. This stunner with a big voice sure hits all the right notes when it comes to fashion as well. She’s been singing for most of her life: starting like most in church. She never thought that music was her destiny, given a strict religious upbringing. At the age of 17 she began studying fashion (another passion of hers) at the prestigious Parsons School of Design. While in New York City, she was introduced to several producers, began writing songs, and very soon afterwards packed up her bags & moved to New York City to pursue a music career seriously. Currently Yoodee is working on an album & performing live shows everywhere, including her most recent stint at Pop Montreal in Canada. With a rapidly growing fanbase, whom she refers to as her "bunnies" she is well on her way to making a name for herself in the industry.

First of all, by now I hope you realize that The Immense Music Squad is for the People. We are geared to help those who need it the most. Whether it be a DJ looking for help AND THE KNOWLEDGE to advance his career or a struggling family that may need clothes and coats, I.M.S. DJs do our part.

With that said, we are currently organizing our 2nd Annual Coat, Clothing & Toy Drive, which will run in conjunction with the 'DJ SNATCH-1 4th Annual Appreciation Event'. In continuing with tradition, we are currently doing research into the organizations that we feel will most benefit from our assistance. Last year, we gave the donated articles to Ms. Richie (pictured above) at St. John's Family Center (Crown Heights, Bk) and Mr. Martin at the Forever USA LLC Foundation, which services many family locations throughout Brooklyn. So, what do we need from YOU? Well, our goal is to continue to bring as many quality articles of clothing to the chosen organization as possible. Therefore, we ask that you look in the back of your closet for those coats, jackets, shoes, pants, etc., that you are no longer wearing and bring it to our event on SATURDAY, DEC. 11th at SAMANTHA'S SOUTHERN CUISINE (980 Fulton St., Corner of Grand Ave., Clinton Hills, Brooklyn) from 3-6pm. Since we invited you, we're gonna give you a RECEIPT for your donation and gift bag to take home, as our gesture of Thanks. Feel free to bring the family with you. Children and Seniors are Welcome. Today's Truth is Simple, Sweet and To The Point. Thanksgiving is this Thursday. Many of us, including myself, have plenty to be THANKFUL for. We have things that many others don't. We should feel blessed that we have a roof over our heads, food on our plates and good health that allows us to go out and provided for our families.

However, there are many in this world that do not have. In this time of Thanks and Giving, let's try to do both. Be thankful and give back to your community. I'm personally donating to food and clothing drives for the homeless and under priviledged, as well as giving back to those who supported me over the years. I couldn't do anything by myself. Remember that!!! Note: Above is a pic taken from one of my coat drives last year... We Never Stop Giving!!!

This weekend, I spoke to quite a few DJs concerning their careers, current & future. Many, if not all, possess the skills that it takes to be successful in this industry. However, not all have the business sense and/ or connections to make their careers profitable. As I mentioned to each and every one of them, 'THERE IS NO PENSION PLAN FOR DJs!!!!'. In other words, make the money, know your worth, be pro-active, create and build on opportunities, know what your competition is doing, save your money and, most importantly, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TALENT!!!!

The BUSINESS of CLUB DJing.....

As a product of many, many years of Professional DJing in NYC and abroad, I can adequately consider myself to be an expert on the topic of Nightlife Entertainment. What does it take to have a successful event from the perspective of the DJ? What are the DJ's responsibilities to the event? How should the DJ conduct his business practice?

The most important aspect of being a successful DJ is reliability. Will this DJ be on time? Will he rock my party? Will he support in the advertising of my event? Once the details of the event are etched out, which should be at the point of booking, the promoter does not want to worry where the DJ is because the doors are about to open. He doesn't want to be concerned with if his patrons will ever start dancing. These are crucial points to the success of an event and, though merely petty thoughts to the big scheme of the night, they can tremendously deflate the energy and prove catastrophic to that event.

In today's media friendly environment, the DJ should be connected to the outlets that gear to large amounts of people. From the days of BlackPlanet.com to today's Blogging, Facebook and Twitter, DJs have the capability to reach out to entire communities. Therefore, it would be beneficial to all parties if the DJ would 'spread the word' about their upcoming events, to a certain degree. 'Come party with me tonight at Club So&So' is a simple way to help advertise the event, without actually doing the job of the promoter. However, not only does it help the promoter pay for the DJ's services in the long run but it also increases the DJ's popularity (especially if the events are quality), which is also very important to a DJ's business. Please note that though the DJ is a popular person, this should not equate into all of his 'friends' getting into his events for free. Less door money equals less payout money, ya dig?

Finally, Payouts... By definition, it's the moment to which the DJ gets compensated for his services. In the olden days (lol), the DJ would get at least half (and sometimes all) of his money prior to the start of the event. However, in today's world, promoters have begun to rely on door and bar numbers plus venue contributions as means for paying the DJ. Personally, I don't care how YOU get it, just make sure I get it before I leave and it's the right amount. Please note (#2) that if the DJ stays the entire night of a 'brick' event, he should be compensated for the entire night. Negotiation is cool unless it becomes regular or unfair..... AND IF HE DOES A GREAT JOB ON A SUCCESSFUL EVENT, HOW ABOUT GIVING HIM A GRATUITY? Over the years, I've noticed a decline in this occurrence, but hey....

At the end of the day, party promotion and event success take a team effort. Work as one and GET PAID!!!!

Welcome Back To My Blog....

Today, I'm gonna deal with KNOWING YOUR PLACE, YOUR VALUE & PAYING YOUR DUES and I'm dedicating it to ALL Up-And-Coming DJs. If you know a DJ, whether he does the neighborhood basement parties, bbqs, local social clubs or is trying to get established in larger markets, do him some needed justice and ensure that he/ she reads today's insert. It is a vital necessity to improving his ranking once he enters the truly professional markets. I've noticed that so many of the younger DJs fail to know about these values.

With the increase in technology, the capability of becoming a DJ is virtually simple. Take a trip to your local Sam Ash Music Store. Purchase 2 Pioneer 1000MK3 CDJs, a Serato sponsored Rane Mixer, a set of headphones, an Amplifier and Speakers. Add to that a Serato Signal Converter Box (if you couldn't quite afford the Serato Mixer and had to settle for a less expensive model) and your best possible laptop (preferrably an Apple Mac Book) equipt with ITunes and you are ready to go. So does that make you a viable Professional DJ? HELL NO, but if you ask some DJs, they'd say yes. That's because they know nothing about 'paying your dues'.

When I decided to upgrade my career from the providing the musical enjoyment for Weddings, Sweet 16's and local block parties in Brooklyn, to rocking at some of NYC's most legendary venues over a decade ago, the transition was very difficult. There were rules that came with making this move. First, I had to understand what value I had in relation to the events that I was getting involved in. In the beginning, my job was to 'open up' for the MAIN DJ. At that time, he was usually DJ SELF, DJ KULCHA or if I was really lucky......GOLDFINGER (Thanks, Patty). If the doors were to open at 10pm, I was there at 9. Reason being, I probably had about 6-8 CRATES OF VINYL (THE MAIN LOST ART) that needed to be carried into the building, then set that up in a separate place from where the MAIN DJ was gonna put his crates and that usually took a minute to move. Once I got on the set, my job was to play 'OPEN UP MUSIC', which was basically throwback R&B records that would help set the tone for the party. Well, I made it my priority to be the BEST 'Open Up' DJ in the city. I wasn't just gonna play any ol' records. I was doing my homework!!! I was gonna play joints that would make the patrons (who came early) take notice to what they were hearing WITHOUT over stepping my boundaries and playing songs that the HEADLINER was guaranteed to play. I was gonna make my mark without doing things that would appear disrespectful to the BIGGER NAMED DJ who coming on once the party REALLY got started. THIS IS 'PAYING YOUR DUES' RULE #1.

Now, most people in the NYC party scene know that my career was built on being one helluva R&B DJ, even though some still owe me my due credit. I broke (first to play at major events to large amounts of people) a number of R&B artists and their records. It just so happen that the surge of the R&B genre coincided with the advancement of my individual career. Music Soulchild, Glenn Lewis, Bobby Valentino, 112 and even Ne-Yo (to name a few) were all on their way to popularity but hadn't reached that point yet. So, they became the focus of my OPEN UP Sets and the patrons who realized the movement I was on, began to come earlier and earlier to hear 'what EXCLUSIVE R&B joints Snatch-1 was gonna pull out'. This also helped me to build relationship with the label reps for some of these R&B artists because prior to that, they were finding it to be a difficult task in getting their records spun in the club. Urban parties meant HIP HOP, not R&B......and not even Reggae, yet. I can say that I was definitely an instumental part in the change in culture. Right SELF, Right NORIE? (Inside joke...they used to call me R&B back in the days......Look at it now!!!)

Eventually, after hard work and building substantial relationships, I built my career to a point where I became the headliner for a few lower level events. For those, usually I was the ONLY DJ. This was my opportunity to learn how to be a headline DJ and earn the pay that they were supposed to receive. KNOW MY WORTH!!! At that point, I no longer accepted the OPEN DJ pay for any event. I was no longer at OPEN DJ Status and I wanted to be treated accordingly across the board. I had to set a minimum rate and for absolutely no reason at all would I accept anything under that minimum.....not even if it was to 'get on the bill' of a major event. Again. I KNEW MY WORTH!!!!

As I reached the level to be considered in the class of the elite, I could feel the difference. My peers began to recognize me as one of them. I still remember DJing at the Legendary SUPPER CLUB (whew I miss that place) and DJ SNS came to the booth to 'Holla at Snatch'. That was big for me. I mean, yeah I DJ'd regularly in the city with Self, Will, Kulcha and Goldie (to a degree) but they were basically accessible due to my relationship to Patty Laurent (X-Factah). SNS was an elite DJ coming from another circle who took time out of his day to come check me. Now I don't idolize anybody but GOD, but I respect those who've earned it. KNOW YOUR PLACE!!!! S, what up!!!!

Finally, I became that Elite DJ that I worked so hard to get to but I wasn't THE Elite DJ. More work to come!!! Formation of DA UNION Club Killaz with SELF & WILL (both of who's careers also mirror my path from 'coming up' to headlining) and watching it's quick growth and success with the help of added DJs to the team, proved that it was worth the blood, sweat and tears. Now, I was getting contacted by promoters from outside my core base. For example, I was being brought in to play the Urban music for primarily Reggae events and things of that nature. Why? Because I was good at what I did and that's what they wanted at their event. Even though I could spin reggae (better than some Reggae DJs that I see today), chances are more likely than not the promoter booked me to play URBAN MUSIC. Add to that, the flyer had me and a bunch of reggae djs on it, so I knew I was not there to play reggae......SO I DIDN'T!!!!! I knew my place.

In closing, I have to say that the DJ game as we now it has changed DRAMATICALLY. Cats believe that because they can go on LIMEWIRE or ITUNES STORE and increase the MP3 library, then they have the tools to DJ at a high level. Well, they are so far from reality that it's insane. This business is delicate and easily destroyed, yet very difficult to rebuilt. I'm on the campaign to taking back the title of DJ from those who, for various reasons including Skillz and Business sense, do not deserve it. I wish I could petition Congress to create 2 separate titles......DJ and Music Player!!!! Until we straighten out the mess that was created, I need the REAL DJs to rise to the top, take back what is there's and do whatever it takes to eliminate the wackness!!!!

I recently had in impromptu street interview with a friend that is working on an Entertainment publication.

During this interview, she asked about the DJ organizations that I've formed, Da Union & The Immense Music Squad.

I explained to her that Da Union pretty much runs itself, but it's I.M.S. that has my drive moving at an eagerly pace.

INTERVIEWER: Why are you so focused on pushing I.M.S.?

S-1: Da Union was a collaboration of Powerful DJs, who felt that we could take the game over if we 'united'.... and we did. However, The Immense Music Squad is my dream. It was my duty to pass on the knowledge and experiences to djs that come after me, as I was taught by some who preceded me.

INTERVIEWER: What if you aren't as successful with this new venture? Especially since you have Da Union as the par line?

S-1: Wow.... (sigh) I think I died.

INTERVIEWER: What? What do you mean?

S-1: That will mean that I lost. And I hate to lose. I think I hate to lose more than I like to win. Losing is like I died!!! Real Talk...

Do you have an abundance of 'FRIENDS' or do you have only a few? Do you think you are a friend to others? Are friends important in your life and valuable to your existence? These are all very interesting, yet important questions.

Over the years, I must say that I've meshed in some facet or another with a wide variety of individuals. Some are business associates, some are casual conversations from time to time. Some come around to hang out and chop it up, some I merely talk to every once in a while. Who do I classify as my 'FRIEND'? All of them or none......or some who exist in the grey area.

A friend is time tested, battle tested and situationally tested. You do not just acquire that title by simply being around. A TRUE FRIEND isn't afraid to tell you something that is to benefit you, even at the expense of hurt feelings and/ or friendship termination. They say 'I'd rather lose a friendship than a friend'.....DEEP THOUGHT!!!! A friend handles issues on your behalf, even if you're not around and doesn't look for a reward at the end. A friend sacrifices his own to make sure you have. A friend defends your name and honor when it becomes questioned by others. A friend is always helpful. A friend finds a way to get there when you need him. A friend listens.

With this said, I'm blessed to say that I have a lot of friends..........GOOD FRIENDS, DIE HARD FRIENDS!!!! More importantly, I hope that over time, I've proven to BE a GOOD FRIEND as well. Some don't realize a good friend until they're gone.

Welcome to another edition of my weekly Blog entitled, 'THE GENERAL SPEAKS THE TRUTH'. I primarily deal with topics that transcend the barriers of community, entertainment and livelihood to help gain awareness, build alliances and formulate assistance for those who need it... no matter what the topic. From hard working, grinding artists who need a platform to be heard, to causes like Teenage Pregnancy and Widespread Homelessness, I try to use the 'TRUTH' as my platform to post information. Join me in attempting to make a difference by simply spreading the word about this little Monday Morning column. I'd greatly appreciate it.

Now, today's 'TRUTH' falls under the category of 'WELL NEEDED INFO'. Many already know, but for those who don't, October has been anointed 'NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH'. This is a disease that bears no color boundaries. It does not recognize age or even sex, (yes, men suffer from this disease as well). Though incurable at this moment, if detected in it's early stages, it is currently treatable. However, how many people actually catch it in time, where treatment is successful or even feasible? We need to spread awareness on topics such as the importance of regular physician visits, as well as how to do our own self checks, just to start. As a result, below are listings of a few articles and website that I have read and felt were pretty informative. Please take a minute to check them out and, more importantly, SPREAD THE WORD!!!
